Letter from the Headmaster
Welcome to this Internet visit with Hillside School. As the ninth Headmaster of Hillside, it is my honor to offer this letter of welcome to all who are interested in our wonderful school.
Throughout Hillside's 105 years of educating middle school children, we have been given many blessings. Though we are a small school as far as enrollment is concerned - 140 students - we have a campus, program and staff worthy of a much larger school. In this letter I wish to focus on the three main areas of our strength: natural resources, programmatic resources and human resources.
Founded in the Swift River valley in 1901, Hillside moved to its present site in the 1920's. We are blessed with a beautiful 200-acre campus bordered by hundreds of acres of conservation land. Our campus is made up of a river, pond, miles of trails, fields and a fully operational farm. These natural resources provide us with excellent recreational opportunities and serve as a base for our academic curriculum.
Programmatically, Hillside is a structured, supportive middle school that serves a variety of students well. We are successful with boys who have struggled socially in larger school settings. We are proud to help boys with LD issues navigate the challenging waters of a middle school education. We are also well known for being an excellent school for traditional learners who want a small, more personal academic environment. Our small class size, well trained faculty, challenging curriculum-one with breadth and depth-and tutorial support program are all key components of our strategy to assist our boys in finding their paths to success.
Our most valuable resource is our faculty, staff and volunteer groups. We have experienced, junior boarding school faculty who are passionate about their craft and our boys. Our staff and administration is outstanding. Our employees are supported by a fabulous Board of Trustees and Parent & Family Association. Hillside believes in the partnership aspect of educating its students.
As you can tell I am proud of our school. I ask only one thing from you - if the pages of the website pique your interest, please come to Hillside and see first hand how wonderful our school is. We are committed to our noble work of helping middle school boys. I look forward to meeting you soon!
