DAR
Founded in 1890, the members of the Daughters of the American Revolution have dedicated themselves to historical preservation, the promotion of education and support of patriotism. Hillside School is one of six currently approved DAR schools and the only school located in the Northeast region of the United States. A long-standing tradition of support has been a cornerstone of the relationship of the Daughters of the American Revolution with Hillside School. Since 1925, when Hillside was recognized as one of the DAR approved schools, a "noble partnership" was forged which continues to this day.
Support comes in many forms from the Daughters; they have generously contributed to Hillside and supplied funding to build classrooms, playing fields, buy books for the Library as well as scholarship aid. A group of Daughters also visit on the first Monday of each month to organize Campbell soup labels for the Labels for Education program. These ladies who give their time to Hillside School have nicknamed themselves the "Chatty Clippers" as they enjoy fellowship while assisting the school. Another form of support comes from invitations to join the Daughters at national, state and local chapter meetings. These events provide members of the Hillside community with the opportunity to talk about our school, introduce our students and discuss our mission with an eager audience.
Each year, in order to say "thank you" to the Daughters for their valued and stalwart support, Hillside hosts DAR Day. In past years, DAR Days were occasions for picnic lunches in the apple orchard, for musical performances and theatrical presentations. Our tradition continues with classroom visits and tours of the Hillside Farm, an awards presentation followed by a luncheon.
