Hillside graduates encouraged to dream big

Thursday, July 09, 2009

Speaking from his own life experience, Hillside School Commencement speaker John Fish urged members of the Class of 2009 to “imagine the possibilities” within their own lives at Hillside’s graduation ceremony on June 6.

“Never forget to dream and always dream big,” Fish advised the graduating seniors. “Realize your dreams by having faith in yourselves.”

Fish was the keynote speaker during Hillside’s Commencement Weekend 2009 which celebrated the graduation of the 30 members of the Class of 2009.

A longtime supporter of Hillside School, Fish is president and CEO of the Suffolk Construction Company, the largest construction firm in New England. Two Hillside graduates, RJ Will ’00 and Kevin Will ’02, are nephews of Fish.

In his remarks, Fish recounted his own struggle with learning differences and how he has successfully overcome and even used personal challenges to his advantage.

The Suffolk Construction CEO encouraged the Hillside ninth graders to “work hard, discover your strengths and from there build your confidence, don’t hesitate to seek guidance from others and never, never stop dreaming.”

Useful advice also came from other podium speakers. Hillside Board of Trustees President Edward Chase, for instance, strongly encouraged parents in the audience to “cherish your children for who they are now, not who they may become in the future.”

Meanwhile, Rex Osae, Jr. ’09, speaking for his graduating class, urged his peers to “truly make a difference by committing ourselves to our families, our communities and the world.”

The commencement ceremony highlighted an active weekend that began with students being recognized for excellence in academics, residential life, and athletics during Prize Day and the Spring Awards ceremonies on June 5. Later that day, Hillside’s graduating class was celebrated at the annual Headmaster’s Dinner.

“As you look forward to tomorrow’s graduation ceremony, we ask that you make a pledge to stay connected to a school that has meant so much in your life,” Headmaster David Z. Beecher asked the soon-to-be graduates.

Dan O’Sullivan ’09, who spoke on behalf of his fellow graduates, was ready to make that commitment. “I’m excited about walking across that stage tomorrow,” he said, “and I am proud about becoming a Hillside alum.”

In concluding the weekend activities, Headmaster Beecher offered a philosophical perspective. He stated: “We ask you to be men of respect and honesty, men who make a positive difference in the lives of others and, please, remember that your school will always be here for you.”
