Databases boost student research

Tuesday, September 22, 2009

Thanks to the Messman-Saran Library’s numerous subscriptions to on-line databases, student opportunities for learning at Hillside are going far beyond the classroom.

“These databases help students with school projects and assignments, even while at home,” says Hillside School Librarian Stephanie Gold.

Gold points out that, at the start of each academic year, students benefit from introductions to these databases during their library orientation. “After they complete the orientation process, our boys are prepared to access our library databases from virtually any computer, extending their studies beyond school hours,” says Gold.

The library’s current on-line databases are:

• WorldBook Online
• Grolier Passport
• Gale Virtual Reference Library
• Science Online
• Issues & Controversies
• NoodleTools

Some of the features of these online databases include:

• encyclopedia articles
• timeline creators
• science projects
• current events & news sources
• biographies
• magazines and newspaper articles
• bibliography creator
• atlases, dictionaries, and more….

“Online databases are an extraordinary resource designed to make research easier and more productive,” concludes Gold.

For easy instructions on using these resources from home, please feel free to contact librarian Gold via email at: sgold@hillsideschool.net or by phone: 508-303-5716.
