Athletics Game Update: Varsity Soccer

Tuesday, September 29, 2009

On September 23, the Varsity Soccer team opened their season playing against one of our arch rivals, the Fay school.

Since this was our home and season opener, the players highly anticipated the match but, with the kick-off, they settled into their game plan. Raymond K. ’11 scored our first goal from twenty-five yards away putting us up 1 to nothing early on.

With Hillside leading most of the game, Fay made a comeback to tie the score at two late in the second half. Shortly after the tying goal, Fay was awarded a penalty kick. The kick was good but waved off due to a Fay player being in the box too soon. The score remained 2-2.

In the 32nd minute, Hillside was awarded a free kick at the 18-yard line. Adolph Kawuba ’10 hit a beautiful left footer around the wall for the go ahead goal and eventual winner.

Adolph Kawuba ’10 played a strong defensive game and scored two goals, one of which was a penalty kick in the first half. Ovie Ojeni ’10 was a force to reckon with in the mid field.

Offensively, Matt Steward ’10 played very well as did our new goalkeeper Idris Taqqee ’11, left wing Isaiah Seetram ’11, right wing Salvador Villalobos Ortiz ’11 and another right wing Ross Osae ’11, who got hurt in the last thirty-three seconds of the game. Overall, it was a good game for the varsity squad to build on.
