Hillside School

Congrats to Eighth Graders Brendan O'Donnell (L in picture) and Connor Guyette for being selected as Hillside's Scholar Leaders, and honored at the 16th annual New England League of Middle Schools Scholar Leaders Banquet on May 20th. These young men were selected by Hillside's faculty to join winners from Fifth to Eighth Grades at nearly 40 other New England schools on the basis of academic excellence, moral leadership, and a willingness and ability to serve as a role model for their schools. Qualities such as teamwork, dependability, respect, and service to others are foundations of this award, and the Hillside community would certainly agree that Brendan and Connor live these every day. Congrats to our two scholar leaders!
Project Bread recently conducted its 46th Walk for Hunger. Nathan Chandler '17 walked for the third straight year, joining an estimated 40,000 participants. Nathan embodies the Hillside virtue of giving back to the community without seeking credit for himself. He understands the big picture and the sacrifice that's needed, getting up at six a.m. Sunday to meet other walkers, walk 20 miles, and head back home. Oh, did we mention he forgot his sneakers and walked the distance in his bass weejuns? Nathan wore a Hillside blue athletic shirt and ended up meeting boys from Fenn, Exeter, BBN, and other schools, some of which had been at Hillside's Spring Fling games. Nathan commented: "The first half is pretty easy, but around 16 miles you start to feel a little tired and sore. It's good to have friends walking with you. The last mile is the hardest. You just have to push through." The Hillside community salutes the determination and generosity of Nathan and his fellow walkers!
Hillside's award-winning choir recently added another medal to their growing collection by winning the Silver in the Group competition at the Eastern Show Choir Festival. Held at Waltham High School, this large event featured nine schools, most with choirs of 25-30 versus Hillside's 17 performers. In addition to the medal, the team received high praise from the Waltham High choir director, according to Hillside's director Shah Salmi. Ninth Graders Jack Baker and Mike Olson, singing in their last competition, told the community afterward that the whole group had enjoyed this and the previous events and were proud of their medal, and that the seniors are looking forward to an alumni performance on campus soon!
