Hillside faculty, staff and students are always excited when our alumni return for a campus visit or event. Our new Speaker Series has brought several young men back to share their experiences with the current students during the lunch-time program, and our alumni events, including the June basketball and hockey games, have fostered great bonding and participation. Most recently, an historic milestone in the athletic area drew many alumni back to campus in December, 2014.
25th Annual Hillside Holiday Basketball Tournament and Alumni Event: December 12-13, 2014
In 1990, Hillside's Brian Pare, a local basketball afficianado who was very active in the youth basketball scene, founded a Holiday tournament with eight local teams. His aims were to get some young men together for friendly competiiton, and to meet other local players in an environment of sportsmanship and community. Over the last 25 years, while the teams and format evolved, these values have remained constant.
In 2014, a strong field of Varsity and JV teams was assembled, alumni were contacted, toiurnament memorabilia was assembled, and an exciting alumni event was built around the game. Hillside has had a proud basketball tradition for the last quarter-century, and many former players, as well as other alums, were excited to see their alma mater battle it out with a group that included rival Rectory. The many basketball program alums were especially happy to see their former coach Brian Pare do a ceremonial tip-off between Hillside and Rectory for the Championship game.
The game was amazing! There was too much going on to summarize it here, so take a look at the full write-up on the Tournaments page!
Post-Game Alumni Event: Guiseppe's Grille, Northborough
Following the game, a total of 28 alumni and guests, still brimming with excitement after the School's great win, migrated to Guiseppe’s Grille to catch up, swap stories and enjoy the restaurant's celebrated appetizers and beverages. This was the second Alumni event tied into the Holiday Basketball Tournament, with the first in 2012 being a big hit and last year's snowed out. Most of the alums had been photographed as a group before leaving the gym (at left).
The Hillside gang included former Assistant Headmaster and Holiday Tournament founder Brian Pare, who had served as coach and mentor to many of the attendees; basketball star and winning 25th coach Junior de la Hoz '03; current facullty member and former player Alex Ribeiro '04; former faculty member Tim Wright; Hillside "do-it-all" veteran and current Director of Alumni Relations Rich Meyer; 25+ year facullty member Rex Osae, happy to see old students; and a welcome cast of other alums and their guests. Rich was especially excited that there were alumni spanning his first year at Hillside in the late '80s to the present day. He thanked the group and reminded them to watch for news of the upcoming Winter event, a Worcester Sharks hockey game. Perhaps inspired by Rich's presentation, several of the alums kept the momentum going by heading directlly to the New England Sports Center to watch the hockey team in their winning effort against Bishop's College.
The evening also included a raffle for a pair of Patriots tickets offered by Headmaster Beecher. The lucky winner was Will Connor '09, who proudly took his close friend and fellow alum Kyle Wilson '08 the next day. They reported a great time at Gillette Stadium watching the Pats pummel the Dolphins, and were grateful for the tickets. Upon departure, it was clear that this group of alumni strongly agreed with Rich's words that the "bond of Hillside will always keep them together."
