Our forty-foot climbing wall and high ropes elements are hard to miss – seeing the course come to life has been exciting and the boys cannot wait for their first opportunity to experience it for themselves. The challenge course is an important component of our enhanced leadership program and will serve as a working laboratory for fostering confidence, community, and brotherhood.

Project Bread recently conducted its 46th Walk for Hunger. Nathan Chandler '17 walked for the third straight year, joining an estimated 40,000 participants. Nathan embodies the Hillside virtue of giving back to the community without seeking credit for himself. He understands the big picture and the sacrifice that's needed, getting up at six a.m. Sunday to meet other walkers, walk 20 miles, and head back home. Oh, did we mention he forgot his sneakers and walked the distance in his bass weejuns? Nathan wore a Hillside blue athletic shirt and ended up meeting boys from Fenn, Exeter, BBN, and other schools, some of which had been at Hillside's Spring Fling games. Nathan commented: "The first half is pretty easy, but around 16 miles you start to feel a little tired and sore. It's good to have friends walking with you. The last mile is the hardest. You just have to push through." The Hillside community salutes the determination and generosity of Nathan and his fellow walkers!

Hillside's award-winning choir recently added another medal to their growing collection by winning the Silver in the Group competition at the Eastern Show Choir Festival. Held at Waltham High School, this large event featured nine schools, most with choirs of 25-30 versus Hillside's 17 performers. In addition to the medal, the team received high praise from the Waltham High choir director, according to Hillside's director Shah Salmi. Ninth Graders Jack Baker and Mike Olson, singing in their last competition, told the community afterward that the whole group had enjoyed this and the previous events and were proud of their medal, and that the seniors are looking forward to an alumni performance on campus soon!

The largest group of Hillside students ever, 19, is in the Dominican Republic for the first week of spring break, led by Monica Lucey, Alex Ribeiro and Steve "Mac" MacDonald. They started by working in sugar cane fields and doing extensive service work in Monte Coca. Two groups rotated through two different kinds of service, picking up trash and cutting wood, and working with the kids in the school in the Batey doing art projects and playing games; they also cut rebar for the house they are helping build. The guys are also having many adventures along the way, combining fun with their good works. See all the details and some great pics of the boys and the local citizens - click the headline above and see the link to their blog!
