Residential Life

Health and Wellness

Hillside School is promoting healthy and balanced lifestyles through its new Health and Wellness Curriculum.

This curriculum promotes healthier eating, nutrition and food choices among our students. At the same time, other health issues being addressed include self-image, plus physical and intellectual well-being among students through the 'five circles of health': physical, emotional, mental, spiritual and social development.

Curriculum goals are being achieved through a combination of classroom discussions, menu changes and other campus-wide efforts. Nutrition education has been further emphasized through the inclusion of whole wheat pasta, steamed vegetables and similar healthy fare on school lunch and dinner menus. At the same time, the personal advantages of making the right food choices are emphasized. For example, students are learning that a healthy, well-balanced breakfast can actually help their brains function more effectively when taking exams.

Parents can help support healthier eating, in part, by sending appropriate food closet items for boarding students to enjoy in their campus houses. Such selections have effectively replaced "junk food" favorites such as corn chips and highly processed cookies in these closets with the likes of whole grain crackers, baked tortilla chips and low fat popcorn.

Nursing/Medical Care
Hillside is staffed by two full-time nurses. They staff the infirmary, located in Drinkwater Hall, from 7:00 am to 7:00 pm, Monday through Friday and are on call each weekend. In addition to their medical qualifications, they are kind hearted, caring people ready to offer a kind word in a boy's time of sickness.

Hillside School utilizes UMass Hospital in Marlborough in case of any emergency. We also have a consulting group of physicians in Marlborough that can treat the normal adolescent illnesses that do not require an emergency room visit. Additionally, the City of Marlborough has an extensive fire department and rescue team that can respond to any campus emergency in just a few minutes.
