Athletics
The focus of coaching at Hillside is not just to win but to use athletics to reinforce the school's core values of respect, honesty, determination, compassion, and fun.
Athletics play an integral role in the growth, development, and education of each boy at
Athletics serve a number of purposes and promote group cooperation, socialization, self-confidence, school spirit, and play, as well as good physical, mental, and emotional health, all of which are essential components of a child’s development. The Hillside Athletic Program emphasizes fair play (sportsmanship), integrity, and effort through student participation. With the coaches' guidance, value development is also stressed.
At Hillside, we believe middle school age boys must learn the importance of pacing themselves and developing the proper balance between their academic, athletic and community responsibilities. Therefore, we limit the number of extracurricular activities outside the School's schedule to one afternoon or one evening during the school week. This policy applies to our boarding students only.
Program Requirements
At Hillside, athletics are an integral part of each student's learning experience and a vital part of the curriculum. Both the satisfaction of scoring a goal and the disappointment of a missed play offer important lessons about life to our boys.
All students are required to participate in one athletic, arts or farm (Eco-Team) offering each term.
While boys are required to participate in at least one interscholastic sport each year, Hillside recognizes that not all boys favor team sports and offers non-competitive options each season, such as sailing, intramural, drama and Eco Team.
