The Approaches to Learning (ATL)

Approaches to Learning (ATL) skills are at the core of the IB Middle Years Programme (MYP), designed to help students become self-regulated learners who can thrive in academic and real-world settings. These skills are not tied to specific subjects but are integrated across all areas of the curriculum, fostering holistic development and preparing students for lifelong learning.

The ATL framework is divided into five broad skill categories:

Communication Skills

Students learn to express themselves clearly and collaborate effectively in a variety of contexts. This includes verbal and nonverbal communication, listening actively, interpreting messages, and presenting information confidently.

Social Skills

These skills encourage students to work well with others, showing empathy, respect, and the ability to resolve conflicts constructively. Teamwork, cooperation, and negotiation are emphasized to build a strong sense of community and collaboration.

Self-Management Skills

Students develop strategies for managing their time, tasks, and emotions. This includes goal setting, organization, mindfulness, and resilience, helping them handle stress and balance academic and personal responsibilities.

Research Skills

These skills empower students to inquire effectively and critically. They learn how to locate, evaluate, and synthesize information from various sources, ensuring the ability to conduct thorough and ethical research.

Thinking Skills

These encompass critical, creative, and reflective thinking. Students practice analyzing complex issues, solving problems, generating innovative ideas, and reflecting on their learning to improve outcomes.

Each skill set is further broken down into specific clusters, providing detailed guidance on how to implement them in classroom activities and assessments. The ATL skills enable students to connect learning across subjects and apply their understanding to real-world challenges, aligning with the IB's mission to develop internationally minded individuals who contribute positively to the world.
