Jumpstart 2022
Robin Shaye

JumpStart 2022 marked a return to pre-COVID times. The weekend consisted of off-campus day trips to historical places in New England including Boston’s Battleship Cove, and Salem.  During weekdays, the days were filled with classes, participating in sports, and evening activities. Mr. Hinde and Ms. Sharrow introduced our new international students to Hillside customs and practices. They also taught language fundamentals and public speaking. Mr. Case worked with our 9th Grade boys on how to navigate the secondary school admittance process. Our seniors practiced mock interviews and visited secondary schools such as Pomfret School, Lawrence Academy, St. Mark’s School, St. Andrew’s School, Worcester Academy, Groton School, and Northfield Mount Hermon.

Mr. Osae and Mr. Cazenave coached the boys in soccer and basketball. Our JumpStart boys went through a rigorous hour and a half of sports training each day.  Ms. Morrisey supervised the dorm at night, and worked on the farm. Ms. Wolk taught music, and Mr. Osae taught art.

All in all, it was a successful and inspiring JumpStart.

Getting a Jump on the school year
Erin Soll
As Hillside School prepared to open for the 2021-2022 school year, 31 international students made their way across newly opened borders, navigating travel restrictions to arrive on campus 2 weeks early as part of our JumpStart program. First launched in 2014, JumpStart is a two-week program for first- and second-year international students that accelerates their transition into the Hillside community and helps prepare them for the year ahead. JumpStart was created to give these students the time and opportunity to ease their transition to life at Hillside, where simply getting over jet lag can take days! The goal of JumpStart is quite simply to give the boys a "jump" on the school year where they can get used to life at Hillside in a safe and transitional way, prior to the official start of school.

Along with honing their English skills, JumpStart connects the boys to the Hillside campus and the broader community. There is an acclimation class that familiarizes them with the school and the nuances of understanding dining hall etiquette, accessing the health center, becoming involved in sports, and living in the dormitory. The boys also have ample opportunity to get off campus and visit local attractions, eat in restaurants, spend time visiting Boston and enjoy the beautiful, late summer weather. The success of JumpStart is measured by how well prepared and acclimated the boys are when all the other students arrive and school begins.

"JumpStart really helped me get ready for the school year. Being on campus and meeting teachers made me less nervous to start school" - 2021 JumpStart student

"JumpStart offers something for everyone. Our new students become immersed in the customs and culture of Hillside so when school starts they know how we do things here. Our returners, have an opportunity to develop their leadership skills and uncover their talents and passions. Lastly, our seniors are able to focus on preparation for the secondary school admission process which really ramps up once the fall starts." - Mike Brown, Director of JumpStart
